Why 5 Degrees Exists
Meaningful progress begins with the next honest choice.
I did not create 5 Degrees because my path was easy or because I discovered all the answers. I created it because I know what it feels like to live through dark chapters, question your worth, lose part of your identity, and wonder how to move forward when life no longer resembles the plan. I also know that light can return, often not through one dramatic breakthrough, but through the language we choose, the focus we redirect, the care we give our bodies, the attitude we practice, and the perspective we become willing to consider. My experiences as an athlete, coach, leader, husband, and father have taught me that meaningful progress begins with the next honest choice. That is the heart behind 5 Degrees: meeting people where they are, without judgment or empty promises, and helping them recognize that they are not permanently defined by the moment they are in. Whether through a book, a conversation, coaching, or speaking, my desire is to help others find greater clarity, rediscover possibility, and take their next step with purpose. If something I have lived, learned, or overcome can help another person move forward, then even the darkest parts of my story can continue serving the light.
Coaching and athletics
Learning through preparation and practice.
Deren began coaching at nineteen. A former collegiate All-American in track and field, he brings experience across the throwing events, bodybuilding, powerlifting, and distance running. Coaching his own children added personal meaning to that work. His daughter became a high school All-American and earned a full athletic scholarship to compete for the LSU Lady Tigers, while his son earned a collegiate basketball scholarship to the University of Indianapolis.
Their accomplishments reflect their own talent, discipline, and dedication. Supporting their development strengthened Deren’s belief that thoughtful coaching helps people recognize their potential, while the choices they make and practice each day turn that potential into progress.
Leadership and professional experience
Helping people recognize what they can carry.
Deren’s experience spans executive leadership, healthcare, construction, business operations, and decades of coaching. Across these settings, he has guided teams, developed individuals, and helped people turn complex challenges into practical next steps. His approach combines clear expectations, thoughtful listening, and personal accountability with respect for each person’s strengths and circumstances. Whether supporting an athlete, a business leader, or someone navigating personal change, his goal is to help people build the clarity, confidence, and habits to move forward independently.
Husband and Father
Family, faith, and service help shape who Deren is and how he approaches his work. As a husband and father, he continues to learn the importance of listening, patience, and showing up for the people he loves. He brings that same care to his coaching and leadership, welcoming people from all backgrounds and respecting the experiences, beliefs, and goals each person brings.
“You don’t need every answer today. You need a reason to begin and the resolve to make the Next Choice.”
